Systems Engineer

Munich
Full-time
Permanent employee

About the role

Gauss Fusion is aiming to build the first commercial scale fusion power plant based on the stellarator concept and is looking for an experienced systems engineer to lead on implementation of best-in-class systems engineering methodologies across the multidisciplinary development team. We expect a proven track record in managing complex technology development projects incorporating systems architecture design, systems integration and qualification through the development lifecyle.

The successful candidate will specify the approach to defining systems requirements, managing interfaces, managing technology risk, managing qualification structures and ensuring configuration diligence across the modelling and documentation systems for our fusion power plant development.

She/he will work closely with the engineering and technology systems teams to generate innovations for design elements and plant layout for the first-of-a-kind power plant.

Gauss Fusion has developed a systems engineering framework which was employed in delivery of the CDR stage of our technology systems’ qualification. Updating this to reflect the change in depth and scope required as we scale the organization and progress towards higher maturity technology qualification and higher fidelity design will be a key part of the role. The role will report to the Director of Engineering.

Main responsibilities

Manage the Gauss Fusion systems engineering activities related to power plant design and integration;
  • Leading systems engineering development for the stellarator power plant, including defining system requirements, developing system architectures, risk assessments, validation and verification, and managing system interfaces.
  • Development of the Gauss Fusion systems engineering framework.
  • Coordination with various engineering disciplines to ensure integration and compatibility of subsystems.
  • Development and maintenance of system documentation, including specifications, design documents, interface control documents.
  • Implement system-level testing and verification to ensure compliance with requirements and specifications.
  • Ensure proper QA and data processes are developed to support and streamline the eventual licensing of the fusion power plant.
  • Implementation of the systems engineering framework through industry standard model based software approaches.

Qualification and educational requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in the engineering field;
  • Professional recognition through full membership of a relevant Institution, or completion of a Phd/Dr.-Ing in a relevant engineering area is an asset.
  • Technical experience:
    • Preferably more than 5 years of experience in engineering or related fields, ideally with experience of working in technology development and subsequent experience working as a Systems Engineer on large-scale engineering projects.
    • Experience in system architecture design, integration, and testing.
    • Familiarity with systems engineering tools and methodologies.

Competences and preferred skills

  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in requirements management and flow-down, configuration management, and risk management.
  • Proficiency in SysML and/or MBSE software tools.
  • Proficiency in Risk Analysis and Failure Mode Analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate complex engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with magnetic fusion and/or power-plant systems preferred.

About us

Gauss Fusion is a European fusion company focused on industrialising stellarator fusion and developing a modular power plant architecture, critical technologies and industrial capabilities required for scaling fusion power plants in the future.

The start-up was founded in 2022 by Frank Laukien together with European high-tech companies with capabilities in magnetic-confinement fusion and component production for Fusion experiments like ITER. Gauss Fusion combines fusion science and systems engineering with industrial engineering and manufacturing expertise. Its peer-reviewed GIGA™ power-plant platform provides the technologically most promising system-level architecture to build cost-efficient stellarator power plants at scale.

Within this architecture, Gauss Fusion is advancing critical technologies in areas including demountable magnet systems, tritium breeding, fuel-cycle technologies, and plasma exhaust. Working with industrial partners, technology providers and leading research institutions across Europe, the company is building the engineering, technologies and supply-chain capabilities required to progress stellarator fusion towards industrial deployment.
